The Power of New Beginnings

The Power of New Beginnings

I have eased into 2025 with a greater sense of self-preservation than I’ve ever had before. After the whirlwind that was 2024 and these first few weeks of the second Trump administration—where every news headline feels like a plot twist and every day is a battle between the free, the oppressed, and the oppressors—I’m still here. You’re still here. We made it! Can you believe it? We’re still standing, still striving, still choosing to show up. That’s worth celebrating.

Looking Back at 2024

For many of us, 2024 challenged our perspectives of freedom and the amerikkkan dream. Between navigating personal challenges and staying sane amidst the election that felt more like reality TV, it was a lot. And yet, here we are, stronger for it.

If 2024 taught me one thing, it’s this: resilience is a superpower. Sure, some days it felt like I was hanging on by a thread, but hey, threads are pretty damn strong. They weave whole tapestries. I’d bet your thread held up pretty well too.

There were wins, moments of growth, and some missteps we probably don’t want to repeat. Yet, here’s the good news— recovery, like life, isn’t about perfection. It’s about showing up, learning from our mistakes, and trying again.

What’s one thing you’re proud of from 2024? Maybe it’s something small, like drinking more water, or something big, like setting boundaries. Take a moment to reflect.

Journaling Prompts for You

  • A lesson from 2024 that’s sticking with you.

  • A project, habit, or dream you’d love to finish this year (even if it’s just halfway).

  • One action you can take today to get started.

2025: Finishing What We Start

I ditched the whole “new year, new me” mantra when I started my recovery journey almost eight years ago. It always left me feeling like I wasn’t satisfied with myself or my life.

This year, I am embracing my full and most authentic self. I am doing what brings me peace, including tying up loose ends. You know those goals I half-started last year (or the year before...or the year before that)? If you can’t relate, I’m proud of you. And if you have some encouragement to spare send it my way. For those who are in the same boat as me, let’s dust off those half-started goals and give them the effort they deserve.

Finishing doesn’t mean hitting the bullseye every time. It’s about following through—even when it’s messy, even when it feels like the world’s on fire (because some days it literally is — love and prayers to all impacted by the California wildfires).

Intentions for 2025

  1. Revisit Old Goals: What’s still worth pursuing? Reframe what “finishing” looks like—maybe it’s just taking one step closer.

  2. Find Joy in the Process: No longer waiting for the perfect moment and just enjoying the ride. Progress is the win.

  3. Stay Grounded: With so much noise (politically, socially, and personally), remember the breath is an anchor in the midst of chaos.

New Year, New Beginning

As January ends, I am prioritizing my recovery and overall well-being. Even with the uncertainty underlying our current political climate in the divided states of amerikkka, we’ve got a chance to rewrite our stories this year—not just for ourselves as individuals, but for our communities too.

Recovery isn’t just personal; it’s communal, it’s political. Let’s be bold in our living well. Let’s choose growth, love, and courage—one step, one moment at a time. And let’s remind ourselves that we don’t need a perfect path to make progress. Every time we show up authentically, every time we choose healing over harm, we’re pushing back against the systems that thrive on keeping us divided and in a state of dis-ease.

Here’s to a year of growth, grit, and more good news. We’ve got this.

What’s one thing you’re working on this year? Drop it in the comments —I’d love to hear your plans for finishing what you start.
