Vegan-ish: Embracing the Power of Plants during the Winter Holiday Season

The winter holiday season is a time of celebration, connection, and joy

but it can also be a challenging period for those navigating grief, mental anguish, recovery, or substance dependence.

I am grateful that I haven’t struggled too badly with seasonal affective disorder this year, even with grief often popping in unannounced. I celebrated seven (7) years in recovery in May, and am very proud of my progress. I’ve been able to sustain reduced use with cannabis (mostly CBD) for medicinal purposes with no reoccurrence (relapse) with alcohol for over a year! I know that my fitness and nutrition regimens have contributed to that greatly. While I don’t subscribe to the cult of veganism, I do however understand and have faith in the medicinal power of plants after years of struggling with health issues.

So, whether you're committed to sobriety, exploring plant-based living, or seeking alternative supports for your mental health, there’s something empowering about embracing the healing properties of plants during this time of year.

Let’s explore how a “vegan-ish” lifestyle, complete with comforting plant-based meals, festive mocktails, and holistic self-care, can uplift your holiday season and support your journey toward wellness.

Vegan-ish Living: Why Plants Matter

Plant-based eating has been widely praised for its ability to nourish both body and mind. While committing fully to veganism may not be for everyone, taking a “vegan-ish” approach—integrating more plant-forward meals into your holiday celebrations—can be transformative.

A few key benefits of plant-based eating:

  • Mood Support: Plant-rich diets are high in nutrients like magnesium, folate, and omega-3s, which help regulate mood.

  • Better Digestion: Fiber-packed foods like vegetables, fruits, and legumes support gut health, which is closely linked to emotional well-being.

  • Sustainability: Choosing plant-based dishes contributes to environmental sustainability, which can deepen your sense of purpose and connection.

Pro Tip: Start small! Introduce plant-based alternatives to traditional dishes. Creamy butternut squash soup, cashew-based mac and cheese, or decadent vegan chocolate mousse can bring festive cheer to your table.

Cheat Code: Find places like Good Vegan Bad Vegan here in Nap or Sweet Vegan Bakes in The Chi that make it easy to incorporate plant-based food into your life because it tastes so damn good! Plus there are plenty of brands at your local grocery store to try or some that even ship nationwide like B.A.D. Gyal Vegan (I haven’t tried this one yet but plan to).

Mocktails: The Art of Celebration Without Alcohol

Mocktails—non-alcoholic cocktails—are a growing trend, especially during the holiday season. They’re perfect for those in recovery or anyone looking to reduce alcohol consumption. These festive drinks can add flair to your celebrations without compromising your commitment to sobriety.

Festive Mocktail Recipes:

  1. Cranberry Sparkle: Mix cranberry juice, sparkling water, and a splash of lime. Garnish with fresh cranberries and rosemary for a holiday touch.

  2. Spiced Apple Cider Mule: Combine apple cider, ginger beer, and a dash of cinnamon. Serve over ice with a cinnamon stick.

  3. Pomegranate Fizz: Stir together pomegranate juice, a splash of orange juice, and club soda. Add a sprig of mint for freshness.

Alternative Supports for Mental Health and Recovery

The holidays can be emotionally taxing, especially for those navigating mental unrest or substance use, misuse, or abuse. Alongside traditional therapies, alternative treatments and supports can play a vital role in recovery and well-being.

Simple Practices to Consider:

  • Mindfulness and Meditation: Practicing mindfulness can reduce stress and foster resilience during busy holiday events. Guided meditations focused on gratitude or grounding can set a positive tone for the season. New content coming soon!

  • Aromatherapy: Scents like lavender, eucalyptus, and peppermint can calm the mind and energize the spirit. Use essential oils in a diffuser or bath to create a soothing environment. Lemongrass is my favorite.

  • Plant-Based Supplements: Herbs like ashwagandha, valerian root, and chamomile are known for their calming properties. Consult with a healthcare professional before incorporating these into your routine. Love a good tea!

  • Community Connection: Seek out recovery groups, wellness collectives, or virtual gatherings to stay connected and supported. Find your tribe, build your village.

Plant Care is Self-Care

Integrating plant-based living into your winter holiday season isn’t just about what’s on your plate—it’s a philosophy of care. From nourishing your body with plant-based meals to sipping festive mocktails and exploring herbal remedies, cultivating a lifestyle that prioritizes healing and balance has never been more accessible.

Whether you're fully vegan, vegan-curious, or just looking to bring more intentionality into your holiday celebrations, embracing the power of plants can provide comfort, connection, and contentment. And for those on the path to recovery, this plant-forward approach offers tools to build a life of resilience and renewal—one delicious, celebratory moment at a time.

Now Let’s Make Like a Plant and Leaf…

I mean leave all of what no longer serves our wellbeing behind. This holiday season, let the power of plants guide you toward wellness and joy. Whether through a vibrant dish, a sparkling mocktail, or a calming aromatherapy session, each choice you make can strengthen your recovery and bring peace to your mind, body, and soul.

Here’s to holidays filled with love, laughter, and the beautiful power of plants. 🌱✨
